"I love my e-reader," says Winnipeg policy analyst Rebecca Walberg, 30, who bought an early generation Sony about two years ago.
"I read everything on it. When I go back to a regular book now, it feels strange."
First, some perspective. Though the publishing industry has had its challenges in recent years, it will be printing old-fashioned books on paper -- a truly perfect technology, ecological concerns aside -- for decades and decades to come.
But for the first time this past year, e-book sales exceeded industry predictions. When the final tally for 2009 is in, they will account for about three per cent of the U.S. total, maybe two per cent in Canada.
"The industry is busy revising its predictions upward," says Steve Osgoode, the Toronto-based director of digital business development for HarperCollins Canada.
"We're not sure when we'll hit 10 per cent, but it looks now as though it will be sooner than later."
With this in mind, we spent a few days taking the two biggest players in the game for a test drive.
In their primary function, the Kindle 2 and the Sony Touch offer a similar reading experience. Each is sleek and slender, a big improvement over the clunky Rocket e-reader of 10 years ago.
They have almost identical screens, about the size of a paperback page. Both screens, too, are similarly grey and drab. This is because they use the new E-Ink technology which, though not available in colour, reflects light rather than emits it.
Experts say this is easier on the eyes. On the downside, it requires an overhead light to read in bed, an annoyance to sleeping spouses everywhere.
Both units offer text magnification, text-search and note-making capabilities. With the Sony, you can move the curser around by touching the screen; it also has an electronic keyboard.
The Kindle provides a miniature keyboard, not unlike those of the first generation pocket organizers. A computerized voice will also "read" the text aloud, a bonus for the visually impaired.
Be warned. Mastering the full range of the functions of both devices will require some patience with the manual. So they may not be for the kinds of people who used to leave their VCR clocks blinking on "12:00"
The big advantage of the Kindle is its wireless connectivity. Once you've provided Amazon with your credit card information, you can download and purchase from anywhere at any time. It is elegant and simple, so simple that impulse buyers may find themselves in trouble. You can even subscribe to a limited range of magazines and newspapers (though not the

IF you think now might be the time to jump on the e-reader bandwagon, consider these pros and cons.
Pros
If you are a constant traveller, you don't have to weigh down your suitcase with bulky books.
With their capacity of about 1,500 books, they allow you to carry your entire library with you at all times.
If you are hanging onto a pole on the bus, you can turn pages with your other hand.
Maybe a cute fellow passenger would be curious enough about your e-reader to strike up a conversation.
You can feel environmentally virtuous, having saved all that paper for printing and gasoline for shipping.
You can also feel like one of the cool kids for being one of the first on your block with a much-discussed gadget.
Bestsellers retail for about $12 in e-book format, less than half their hardcover price.
E-readers' text-search capabilities make it a snap to find a quotation or the first reference to a character's name.
You'll be able to read your notes in the margins, because they will be neatly typed.
Cons
You'll have to buy a lot of books to make back the cost of an e-reader, which is still in the $350 range.
At that price, it's risky to use it in the bathtub, or even on a sandy beach.
If you lose it, have it stolen or break it, there goes your library.
If you buy this year's model, as with any electronic toy, you know that you'll be able to get a better and cheaper one next year.
The digital platform could change entirely, making your reader as useful as an eight-track tape player.
Typography, cover design, paper style -- everything that makes a book a wonderful artifact -- is lost to you.
E-readers are still pretty much useless for books with illustrations, charts, graphs and the like.
Thanks to copyright protection, you can't lend a book to a friend without giving them your e-reader.
